Human race evolved over millions of years - one of the most important difference between humans and other anumals is the ability to walk and balance on two limbs. This is a highly complicated task involving multitudes of nerves which send signals to the brain and muscles which are activated by brain, or even subconsciously to keep ourselves erect and walk on two legs! Gait disturbances are common in Longstanding Diabetics due to Diabetic Neuropathy, as the perception of nerves is decreased in the feet, brain does not get adequate information about movement of legs and patients may frequently suffer from falls and balance problems. Since by the time people start suffering from gait disturbances due to uncontrolled Diabetes, they are usually above 60 yrs of age and also suffering from osteoporosis, even a fall while walking or stumbling may result in a fracture. Diabetics with feeling of imbalance while walking should use adequate supportive measures while walking like walking sticks, wear good comfortable shoes and regularly do balance training- these are special exercises which help in maintaining balance of the body. This further highlights the importance of total control, which can be achieved only with proper Diabetic diet and Lifestyle interventions. |
