Liver and Diabetes

Diabetes and Liver

Liver is one of the most complex chemical factories ever conceivable. It continuously processes the products absorbed from our intestines and makes useful and essential molecules for our own body. At the same time it’s a great storage device, It also works as a purifier of our blood- continuously removing unwanted toxins and harmful chemicals either ingested or formed in our own body as a result of the various biological processes going on inside all living beings.

The importance of liver can be recognized by this fact that all the nutrients absorbed by our intestines into blood stream HAVE to pass through the liver.

Important functions of Liver

Detoxification of the blood from

  • Ingested Food
  • Alcohol
  • Drugs

  • Proteins,
  • Cholesterol,
  • Hormones,
  • Products for Blood Coagulation

Metabolizes (Processes)

  • Carbohydrates
  • Proteins
  •  Fats

  • Energy storage in form of Glycogen

High Fasting Sugar- is Liver to blame?

Liver plays an important role in regulation of Blood Glucose levels. First of all Blood Stores Glucose in the form of Glycogen – which can also be termed as the animal starch, these are converted back into glucose as and when required by the body. In fact this is the energy which is utilized for beating of the heart and working of brain cells when all the glucose which was absorbed from the food has disappeared into the cells.

But the levels of glucose released from the liver are strictly controlled by the hormones Insulin & Glucagon produced by the Pancreas. Insulin suppresses the production of glucose from the liver whereas Glucagon promotes its release thus maintaining the blood glucose levels under tight control.

But in Diabetes the fasting or pre-meal Blood glucose levels are frequently high due to deficiency of Insulin and excessive release of glucose from the liver.

Fatty Liver- NAFLD ( Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease)

This disease is frequently seen in Diabetics and their family members. This is caused by fat deposits in the acini of liver – the working units. As a result of the ensuing repair processes the cells of Liver themselves are damaged and replaced by Scars and non-functional fibrous tissues.

Uncontrolled fatty liver over years may ultimately lead to Cirrhosis of the Liver and Liver Cancer as well. Since this condition is absolutely asymptomatic no one pays any attention to it. By the time symptoms occur and doctor is consulted it may be too late to give substantial benefit. This can be discovered only through blood tests – SGPT, SGOT, GGTP and Sonography (Ultrasound) of the Liver

Tips for treatment of Fatty Liver:

  • Have plenty of green Vegetables, Leafy Vegetables, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli
  • Fruits- Guava, Apple, Plum, Apricot, Watermelon, Melon etc.
  • Whole Grains- Oats, Wheat Dalia, Barley
  • Decrease- Avoid sweets
  • Decrease – Avoid Fat containing foods- Fried foodstuff, Butter, Cream, Desi Ghee
  • Exercise Daily- Decrease weight and Burn excess Calories.

Another related issue in Diabetes in people suffering from Liver failure- most of these persons develop Diabetes – which is sometimes termed as Type-3 Diabetes, Which needs to be managed in order to ameliorate the deteriorating condition of such patients.
