Food:

Western

In the Colder countries summers bring plenty of fruits and vegetables which are highly recommended for Diabetics, Green leafy vegetables, fresh berries, available in plenty and  good for diabetics. Vegetables , specially salads have almost zero calories, they can be had as much as desired, help increase HDL ( the ‘Good Cholesterol’) and keep sugar down as they are of Low Glycemic Index and would decrease the absorption of foods consumed with them.

Indian

In most of the Indian subcontinent (except the north which may have climate similar to the western countries) A lot of refreshing drinks are consumed during the summers. Care must be taken to avoid Sugarcane juice – which is very popular in North India, as well as other sugar containing beverages and aerated drinks like the popular Colas, lemon, mango and fruit drinks. ‘Chach’ or buttermilk is one of the best thirst quenching drinks for diabetics in the scorching hot weather, lemonade should be taken either with salt and masala or with sugar substitutes .

Generally appetite is decreased in the hot weather which goes in favour of Diabetes control.

Infections & Dehydration

This season also causes a lot of diseases related to Gastrointestinal system like Diarrhea, vomiting – leading to loss of water and salts from the body. Children are more prone to such diseases. These may complicate into Diabetic Ketoacidosis if not treated promptly, remember sometimes even Diabetics on Oral medicines may have to be given insulin injections to prevent such complications.

Uncontrolled Diabetes may predispose to the frequent infections of stomach and throat which are prevalent in summers.

Dehydration specially due to Stomach infections frequently causes hypoglycemia as people do not tolerate food and liquids Oral rehydration solutions are helpful.

Plenty of water is lost due to sweating and evaporation- Drink adequate water and prevent dehydration.

Is the usual ORS Solution recommended for Diabetics?

In case of Dehydration – The same ORS solution may be recommended  as all the essential salts together with glucose are lost with body fluids-.

Are fresh fruit juices good for diabetics?

Juices are not preferable for Diabetics as they mostly contain carbs sans the good fibres which are helpful . Lemonades are more preferable to juices.

Diabetes and Travelling

plane flying

Don't worry if you are a Diabetic and you need to travel. Your Blood Sugar does not come in your way of seeing the world, or just goig about your work in other cities or countries. Just be careful about some details

Medicines

Take an ample stock of medicines with you, atleast 10 days more than that of your anticipated stay. ( Many countries have different regulations and all medicines are not available everywhere- some medicines which are easily available in Europe may not be availabe US at all.

Prescriptions

Do take a copy of the latest prscription by your doctor with you, together with a breif history or summary of your earlier reports including ECG. In case you have to visit a locoal doctor , or are admitted to a hospital or emergency room for any reason, it really helps in making right decisions and saves costs of treatment as well.

Food

Be careful about your food always, this does not mean avoiding local delicacies and experiences. Try to taste everything, but control your portion sizes. Do take lots of fruits and salads.

Insulin

If you are on insulin, you must keep ample extra vials, and an icebag which could maintain appropriate tempratures, such bags are easily available.

Its always better if you keep your glucometer together with spare strips and lancets so that you check and be sure that your on everywhere on target.

Bon Voyage!!

Watchin TV sitting on a couch

Woman pedalling while sitting on a couch

Excessive love for watching Television may lead to Obesity!

Yes this is true- People who are addicted to TV spend a lot of time sitting on the couch enjoying their favourite shows and perhaps munching chips, Popcorns, cookies or other snacks with soft drinks or Tea/ Coffee. This all may lead lead to increased Caloric intake with decreased expenditure, as a result these people gain weight- Insulin resistance increases which further leads to raised blood sugar levels. TV also deprives us of the precious time which may have been utilized for physical work, exercises, or in children for outdoor activities.

If you have to watch your favourite show why not work on a pedal in the meantine, cycle, or treadmill in front of the TV
