Changing Lifestyle means a lot more than just eating this or avoiding that, these are just the results of a larger process.
First and foremost is understanding that we are doing something or rather we are not doing something important - which is going against the basic rules of our body and is not compatible with our lives.
We need to make the right and healthy selection when given various choices.
We need to infuse activity into our life,
Diabetes and Alcohol
Consumption of alcohol by diabetics should be avoided.
Alcohol is a high calory drink, the calory content of alcohol is next only to fats- it contains about 7 Kcals per gram whereas Fat 9 Kcals per gm
This increases the body fat which is already increased in type 2 Diabetes. This may lead to aggravation of insulin and further deterioration of Blood glucose control.
Excess alcohol causes deposition of fats in Liver- this adds to the insulin resistance in liver which may increase glucose output by liver and lead to fasting hyperglycemia.
Alcohol may cause inflammation of pancreas ( pancreatitis ) which causes destruction of insulin producing Beta cells, together with other cells in pancreatic cells. This further decreases the amount of insulin available and leads to hyperglycemia.
Alcohol intake may promote formation of atherosclerotic plaques which may lead to many complications like heart attack, stroke etc.
Diabetes and Smoking
Smoking negatively effects Diabetics, together with increasing the risks of dideases like lung, mouth and bladder/ prostate cancer, smoking increases the risks of complications of diabtes manifold ,specially Heart attack and stroke.
Smoking is known to damage body's lipid balance- it increases LDL cholesterol, increases Triglycerides, all these things are a part of Diabetes syndrome, with smoking they only get aggravated.
Nicotine inhaled through cigarette smoke causes a prothrombotic state in blood- this leads to formation of clots in blood vessels which block supply of blood to heart and brain, causing stroke, Angina and heart attack.
Smoking increases Blood pressure which is harmful for Diabetics, may lead to rupture of blood vessels in brain or heart leading to fatal consequences.
Cigarette smoking clogs and damages blood vessels of extremeties- specially legs causing decreased blood supply to nerves and muscles- Smoking can thus aggravate peripheral neuropathy and peripheral vascular disease of lower limbs which is often the cause of gangrene and subsequent amputation of limbs in Diabetics.
Diabetes & TV Watching
Excessive love for watching Television may lead to Obesity!
Yes this is true- People who are addicted to TV spend a lot
of time sitting on the couch enjoying their favourite shows and perhaps
munching chips, Popcorns, cookies or other snacks with soft drinks or Tea/
Coffee. This all may lead lead to increased Caloric intake with decreased
expenditure, as a result these people gain weight- Insulin resistance increases
which further leads to raised blood sugar levels. TV also deprives us of the
precious time which may have been utilized for physical work, exercises, or in
children for outdoor activities.
